Person responsible for CTC programme: Jan-Willem Mens, MD and Dr. Manouk  Olofsen – van Acht, MD

Hospital overview:

The department of Radiation Oncology at Erasmus MC Cancer Institute is one of the largest in the Netherlands, with over 5,600 patients treated each year, 13 linear accelerators including 2 Cyberknife Robotic Radiosurgery Units on three different locations. The department comprises a very active Intervention Radiotherapy program including hyperthermia and brachytherapy.

In addition to this, we have a world-class Radiobiology department focusing on DNA repair mechanism with Hyperthermia, and an internationally recognized Medical Physics Department with a strong research program focusing on planning automation and optimization, adaptive radiotherapy with in room CT, and biological image guided radiotherapy.

Our department also has a very close collaboration with Leiden and Delft Universities developing the Holland PTC proton therapy facility.

A total of 26 Radiation Oncologists, one Hyperthermia specialist, and 9 Medical Physicists are deeply committed to improve the treatment of our patients, creating novel forms of cancer ablation therapies - the vision being to deliver a minute number of treatments with extreme precision, such that patients could return to their normal lives quickly and minimizing side effects of the radiation treatment.

CTC programmes offered:

Programme description:

In our institution, we annually treat about 50 cervical cancer patients with primary radiotherapy, combined with chemotherapy and/or hyperthermia.  All these patients receive treatment with auto-VMAT plans, with an online adaptive strategy to follow the daily movement of the cervix and uterus. For this purpose polymeric fiducial markers are implanted before start of the treatment. MRI-guided adaptive intracavitary/interstitial brachytherapy is an important part of the treatment.

During the observership you will learn about diagnosis and treatment of gynecological tumors, in cooperation with our radiation oncologists, medical physicists and also gynecological oncologists. You will focus on cervical cancer, and our program of online adaptive radiotherapy, brachytherapy, and hyperthermia.

Depending on the specific needs of the applicant, the clinical or physical focus of the program can be customized.
