One of the major drives in cancer care remains a reduction of variability in outcome between countries, as well as within regions in each country.
As an evolution of the Clinical Fellowship Programme, ESO recognises that both observership and “hands on” teaching at the bedside, in the context of working in multidisciplinary teams, is an essential component of education and training in cancer care and herewith provides structured training programmes in centres of excellence.
Within the Clinical Training Centres programme, ESO intends to complement its existing educational offer by organising trainee oncologists of the future to spend a period of time in a clinical setting specially designed to address their needs and to encourage mobility within EU and different countries.
Reputable institutes have adhered and will provide environments in the form of Clinical Training Centres to fulfill this goal.

At the end of the period of attachment it is anticipated that candidates, as well as having more knowledge in their own specialty, will be given a good overview of all the issues involved in the running of a successful Cancer Unit, including issues such as Audit and Quality Assurance.
There is a limited number of training grants available so only physicians who have specialised within the last five years or will complete their specialisation by the start of the training period are eligible for a fellowship. A number of training positions are also reserved for physicians from Arab countries and a small number of fellowships will also be given to physicians from Latin American countries who have participated in an ESO Masterclass in the region.
Structured educational programme
The following are some of the direct contact education experiences that will be available to successful candidates. These are divided into clinical teaching activities common to all cancer types, as well as those specific to the different specialties and cancer types.
|-|| ||General experience|
| || ||Become an integrated member of the specific cancer team to which the candidate is attached.|
Attend weekly word rounds, multidisciplinary meetings, radiology conferences, pathology conference, research meetings.
Attend at outpatients clinic (approximately three per week).
Attend at local/regional/national cancer meetings taking place during the period visit of the candidate.
| || || |
|-|| ||Specialty and/or disease specific experience|
| || ||As well as the above, the trainee will be exposed to the clinical activity specific to his/her specialty and site-specific interest. As such, a programme will be developed for each candidate which will be tailor-made to his/her educational needs and this will differ between the specialties of surgical, radiation and medical oncology. Specific examples include attendance to operating sessions for the surgical oncologists, attendance at simulation and other activities relating to radiation oncology, as well as planning of therapeutic regimens for medical oncology. |
It will be possible to discuss with each successful candidate what mix of the above suits his/her particular needs. It will be important, however, that a limited period of exposure to the other specialties is a component of this training experience, such that for example, a surgical oncologist spends a limited period of exposure to the radiotherapy and medical oncology services.
The 2017 Clinical Training Centres programme will be supported by a Fund provided by the European School of Oncology and an educational grant from Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany.
